What happened here?

These images were sent from a customer. Their kitchen chair is less than one year old and the soft wheel ring is already peeling off.

Quality matters!

As more people have hardwood floor installed. The standard hard nylon caster is no longer the best for this type of flooring surfaces. Most chair manufacturer supply the chair with the basic hard nylon caster. Soft wheel casters are usually an option that costs extra.

Always use the same wheel diameter as your broken caster. If possible, use one size larger. Larger wheel will give you better mobility. You may not need the higher weight capacity but better mobility is always easier when you want move around.

1. Socket type - 5/16" dia x 1-1/2" L, to go into a plastic or metal caster socket.
   drill a hole in wood > insert plastic or metal caster socket > insert caster
   

   

2. Threaded type - 1/4" - 20, 5/16" - 18, 3/8" - 16 or 1/2" x 13 threads.
   

   

3. Plate type - many plate sizes to choose from.
   

   

4. Grip ring type - diameter of 3/8", 7/16" or 10mm to choose from.
   Usually go into chair base or existing hole.
   

   

5. U type - 5/8", 3/4" or 1" opening for use with vertical wood like microwave oven stand or computer workstation.
